"I didn't expect to talk about this in career coaching"

Career coaching sometimes gets boxed in with concepts like resume review, training, leadership development, and promotions. Those things are great if that's what you want, but sometimes you just want to move closer to your loved ones or be able to live somewhere that has authentic tacos (oh Tucson, one of many things I miss about you - in summer that list gets short, but tacos are still at the top).

Right now, we're all looking at work a little differently. "Will I be home for the next 3, 6, 12, 24 months? If so, do I have to live here, far from my friends or the mountains I crave? Or can I make sure I've got good WiFi and live wherever I want that makes me feel fulfilled?"

I don't know the answer, but I bet your gut is telling you something right now. Coaching is about asking the questions your gut has only hinted at, and then digging in to do the work of uncovering the answers. Sometimes, YES, you have to update your resume, apply for jobs, network (some of us love it, some of us hate it)... but sometimes, you just need someone to ask you, "What would actually make your life better?" and then really listen as you describe the small but very real changes that would be most meaningful to you, right now. More mountain biking, authentic in-person relationships, better tacos.

Sometimes, you just need someone to ask you, "What would actually make your life better?" and then really listen to you.

So when I had my first call with a new client this week and she said, "I didn't expect to talk about this in career coaching" I was deeply honored. While she was expecting we would dig in to her next professional move, I was also asking her what's made her happiest in the past 6 months, what feels off, and what small change could she make to start feeling better sooner. Her surprise means I've asked the right set of questions to get her started, and that we're both bringing our whole selves to coaching.

If you'd like to bring your whole self to a coaching relationship with me, please set up a time to talk. I can't wait to hear about your real hopes, nagging fears, unique opportunities, and favorite foods.
